The Mick Maslen collection contains over 200 photographs donated to the gallery by Mick Maslen.
Mick Maslen (1946-2018) was an artist and teacher. He worked in a range of mediums including painting, drawing, collage and photography. Maslen taught at Cheltenham School of Art, University of Gloucestershire and was a main contributor to The Guardian newspaper's Free Guide to Drawing in 2009. He later collaborated with Jack Southern on the book 'Drawing Projects: An Exploration of the Language of Drawing'.
The Young Gallery holds a collection of over 200 photographs by Maslen. This includes his portfolio of Swindon, which focuses on decorative details and architectural features, including door handles, numbers and road markings. In addition, the collection contains photographs taken by Maslen in New York, Istanbul and Cuba. These focus on colour and texture, and include portraits of people he met while travelling.
Maslen appreciated teaching and learning from his students. He stated "We can all draw in our own way."* Maslen later developed Parkinsons, causing a tremor in his hand which led to him adapting how he drew and he created art.
Maslen's work sits within the Young Gallery's photography collection which includes portfolios of photographs by the leading British photographers such as Fay Godwin and Tony Ray Jones. This collection may be accessed on request, please email YoungGallery@wiltshire.gov.uk (opens new window)
