Edgar Barclay
Edgar Barclay (1842-1913) was a landscape artist and author. The Young Gallery holds a collection of his artworks relating to Stonehenge.
Barclay studied art in Germany and Italy, and lived in both Italy and England. He was an artist and author known for his landscape paintings.
In the early 1880s, Barclay returned to England and became interested in painting rural scenes of Wessex, especially of Stonehenge. He was known for his skilful handling of light and big skies, as well as detailed plans and illustrations of the monument. After exhibiting his paintings, he began writing and speaking about Stonehenge, working with the British Archaeological Association before publishing the book 'Stonehenge and Its Earth-Works' in 1895.
The Young Gallery holds a collection of Barclay's paintings of Stonehenge. These were gifted by Barclay's sister. For more information about the collection, or to book a research appointment, please email YoungGallery@wiltshire.gov.uk (opens new window).
